Mahendra Singh Dhoni is a former Indian wicket-keeper batsman and former Indian captain who is known for his dominating batting, excellent wicket-keeping and captaincy. Mahendra was born on 7th July 1981 in Ranhi, Jharkhand, India to Paan Singh Dhoni and Devaki Dhoni. His father was a pump operator in a junior management position in MECON Colony. He has two siblings. He did his schooling at DAV Jawahar Vidya Mandir school. He was the goalkeeper of the school’s football team. But later he was chosen for his school’s cricket team as a wicketkeeper.

For his well-wicket-keeping performance in his school team, he became the regular wicket-keeper at the Commando Cricket Club in 1995. Again his good performance helped him to play in the 1997/98 season Vinod Mankad Trophy Under-16 Championship. His performance was also good there.

In 1998, Mahendra was selected by a former Bihar Cricket Association Vice President and Ranchi District Cricket President Deval Sahay to lay for the CCL (Central Coal Fileds Limited) team. With his excellent performance, he moved to the Ranchi Team, the junior Bihar cricket team and the senior Bijar Ranji Team within one year. Dhoni also played for the Bihar U-19 and East Zone U-19 cricket teams.

Mahendra made his Ranji Trophy debut with Bihar in the 1999-2000 season of Ranji Trophy. After that, he played several matches and tournaments including, Deodhar Trophy, Duleep Trophy, and Ranji ODI tournament. BCCI’s small-town talent-spotting initiative Talent Resource Development Wings’s (TRDW) officer Prakash Poddar discovered Dhoni’s talent.

In 2001, Mahendra got the job of a TTE (Travelling Ticket Examiner) at Kharagpur Railway Station.

Later Dhoni was selected for India A team and his performance received attention from the then-Indian captain Sourav Ganguly and Ravi Shastri.

Dhoni made his ODI debut for India on 23rd December 2004 against Bangladesh. He played 2007, 2011, 2015 and 2019 ICC Cricket World Cups for India and led the team in the 2011 and 2015 World Cups. He played 350 matches for team India and scored 10,773 runs with a 50.53 batting average and took 1 wicket. His top score in ODI is 183 not out. His best bowling figure is 1/314. In 2007 Dhoni became the captain in limited over. Dhoni played his last ODI match on 9th July 2019.

Dhoni made his T20I debut for India on 1st December 2006 against South Africa. He played and led the team in 2007, 2009, 2010, 2012, 2014 and 2016 T20 World Cups for India. He played 98 T20I for team India and scored 1617 runs with an average of 37.60. His top score in T20I is 56. Dhoni played his last T20I match on 27th February 2019.

Mahendra made his test debut for India on 2nd December 2005 against Sri Lanka. He played 90 test matches for team India and scored 4876 runs with a 38.09 batting average. His top score on the test is 224 not out. Dhoni played his last test match on 26th December 2014.

He left his limited-overs captaincy in 2017 and test captaincy in 2014.

In 2008, Dhoni was bought by the IPL franchise Chennai Super Kings. Under his captaincy team won the 2010, 2011, 2018 and 2021 editions of the tournament. The team also won the 2010 and 2014 Champions League T20 titles and ended up as a runner-up in the 2008, 2012, 2013, 2015 and 2019 league seasons. In IPL, Dhoni played 234 matches and scored 4978 runs with an average of 39.20.

Apart from cricket, Dhoni holds the post of vice-president of marketing in India Cements Ltd. Dhoni is also the co-owner of Ranchi-based hockey club Ranchi Rays, a franchise of the Hockey India League, along with Sahara India Pariwar. Dhoni is also a co-owner, along with Abhishek Bachchan and Vita Dani, of Chennai-based football club Chennaiyin FC, a franchise of the Indian Super League. In February 2016, Dhoni launched the lifestyle brand SEVEN. Dhoni owns the footwear side of the brand and is also the brand ambassador of SEVEN. In 2019, Dhoni invested in CARS24 and simultaneously became the company’s brand ambassador. On 11th October 2022, MS Dhoni invested in Shaka Harry, a plant-based protein company.

Dhoni holds the honorary rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the Parachute Regiment of the Indian Territorial Army (106 Para TA battalion). The honorary rank was presented to him by the Indian Army in 2011 for his service to the nation as a cricketer.
After completing five parachute training jumps from Indian Army aircraft in the Agra training camp, he became a qualified paratrooper in 2015. In August 2019 he completed a two-week stint with the Territorial Army in Jammu and Kashmir.

On the personal front, Dhoni married Sakshi Singh Rawat on 4th July 2010. Together they have a daughter, Ziva.
