Kennedy John Victor popularly known as Vikram is an Indian actor and playback singer who is known for acting in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Hindi cinema. He was born on 17th April 1966 in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India to John Victor (alias Vinod Raj) and Rajeshwari. His father is an actor and his mother was a sub-collector. His maternal uncle, Thiagarajan is a director and actor. Actor Prashanth is Vikram’s first cousin. He did his schooling at Montfort School, Yercaud. He did his graduation in English Literature from Loyola College, Chennai. During his school time, Vikram participated in Karate, Horseback riding and Swimming. He also joined the school’s theatre club for a long period and also participated in it sometimes backstage and sometimes in a lead role. He also appeared in several dramas during his college days. He also even won the Best Actor Award for his performances. 

Vikram started his career with modelling and appeared in several television advertisements, such as Chola tea, TVS Excel, Alwyn watches and others.

In 1988, he appeared in a television serial, Galatta Kudumbam.

In 1990, he made his film debut with the Tamil film En Kadhal Kanmani.

In 1991, he appeared in his second film, Thanthu Vitten Ennai.

In 1992, he appeared in two films, Kaaval Geetham and Meera.

In 1993, he made his Malayalam and Telugu debut, with Dhruvam and Akka Pettanam Chelleli Kapuram. He also appeared in two films that year, Chirunavvula Varamistava and Mafia.

Sainyam, Bangaru Kutumbam, and Pudhiya Mannargal are his three films that were released in 1994.

In 1995, he starred in the films, Street and Adalla Majaka. In that year, he appeared in a television series, Chinna Chinna Aasaigal  Ilakkiya.

In 1996, Vikram acted in half a dozen films, Mayoora Nritham, Ooha, Akka! Bagunnava?, Merupu, Indraprastham, Rajaputhran.

He had three releases in 1997. The films were, Itha Oru Snehagatha, Kurralla Rajyam and Ullaasam.

Kangalin Vaarthaigal was his only released film in 1998.

1999 was a successful year for Vikram. He had two releases, Housefull and Sethu. Sethu marked the turning point of his career. His performance in the film was highly praised and critically acclaimed. He won Filmfare Special Award  South and the Tamil Nadu State Film Award Special Prize for his role. According to sources, in that year, Vikram missed National Film Award for Best Actor by a single vote to Mohanlal.

In 2000, Vikram was seen in two films, Indriyam and 9 Nelalu. His performance in 9 Nelalu was praised. In that year, he was also seen in the television film, Siragugal.

In 2001, he appeared in five films, Youth, Vinnukum Mannukum, Red Indians, Dhill and Kasi. Film Kasi was another successful film for Vikram. His performance received several positive reviews from reviewers and critics. He won the Filmfare Best Tamil Actor Award and Cinema Express Award for Best Actor for his role.

In 2002, he had three releases, Gemini, Samurai and King. He was praised for all of his roles and received a positive response from the audience.

In 2003, he appeared in four films, Dhool, Kadhal Sadugudu, Saamy and Pithamagan. Excluding Kadha Sadufudu, Vikram won positive reviews and was critically acclaimed for each of his roles. He gained popularity with his appearance in Sammy and Pithamagan. He won several awards for the film Sammy and Pithamagan including Filmfare BestTamil Actor Award and the National Film Award for Best Actor. 

In 2004, he had only released the film Arul.

In 2005, Vikram appeared in two films, Anniyan and Majaa. His performance in the film Anniyan was highly praised and critically acclaimed and won Filmfare Awards South for Best Actor. He also worked as an assistant director in the film Majaa. 

Bheemaa was his only released film in 2008. His performance was praised by the reviewers and the audience.

In 2009, he starred in the film, Kanthaswamy, the first superhero film in Tamil cinema.

In 2010, he made his Bollywood debut with Raavan. He also aeared in film, Raavanan. He was highly praised for both of his performances. The Hindu stated it was a “master stroke” and claimed that Vikram “raises the bar higher with every venture”. He won several awards as Besta Actor including Filmfare Awards South and Tami Nadu State Film Awards.

In 2011, he appeared in two films, Deiva Thirumagal and Rajaattai. Again he was praised and his performance critically acclaimed for his role in Deiva Thirumagal. He won several awards for his role including Filmfare Awards South in Best Actor (Critics).

In 2012, he had only released the film, Thaandavam. For his performance, he was nominated for Filmfare Award for Best Actor Tamil.

David was his only film which was released in 2013. The film was simultaneously released in Hindi, He also co-produced the film.

In 2015, he appeared in two films, I and 10 Endrathukulla. For I, Vikram’s performance was highly praised and critically acclaimed. He received a positive response from the audience also. Again he won several awards including Filmfare Awards South for Best Actor.

In 2016, he had only released the film, Iru Mugan.

Sketch and Saamy Square were his only releases of 2018.

In 2019, he was seen in two films, Kadaram Kondan and a special appearance in the film Adithya Varma.

He was last seen in the 2022 film Mahaan.

He has three upcoming films, Cobra, Ponniyin Selvan: I and Chiyaan 61.

He is also known for dubbing during the early days of his career. He gave his voice in several films from 1993 – 2000. The films were, Amaravathi, Kadhaian, Raasaiyya, VIP, Jolly, Satya, Gandhi, Devi etc.

He also appeared in several music videos.

Not as an actor, Vikram is also famous as a playback singer. He sings several songs in his career, such as “Yaamirukka Bayamein” for Shree (2002), “O Podu” in Gemini (2002), “Excuse Me”, “Ithellam Dupe” / “Ivannee Dupe”, “Mambo Mamiya”, “Meow Meow” for Kanthaswamy (2009), “Meghame O Meghame” for Madrasapattinam (2010), “Laddu Laddu” for Rajapattai (2011), “Kanave Kanave” for Sketch (2018), “Theesudar Kuniyuma” for Kadaram Kondan (2019) etc.

Apart from acting, Vikram is known for promoting various social causes with his charity and social works. He associated with Kasi Eye-Care which does free eye surgeries for the poor. He is the brand ambassador of Sanjeevani Trust, a school for the special child. With his fans, Vikram set up The Vikram Foundation for several social causes, such as heart operations for the poor, educating poor children and rehabilitating victims of natural disasters. United Nations Human Settlements Programme selected Vikram as a Youth Envoy with his aims to spread awareness about the statutes of U.N. Habitat which include urban stabilisation and to help formulate plans for effective water management, slum eradication and women and youth empowerment. Several other works he has done for school and college dropouts and flood-affected people.

He is also the endorser and brand ambassador for several brands.

He won received Kalaimamani Award from the Government of Tamil Nadu in 2004. In 2011, Vikram was awarded an honorary doctorate in the field of Fine Arts from Universita Popolare Degli Studi di Milano (People’s University of Milan)

He married psychology teacher Shailaja Balakrishnan in 1992. Together they have a daughter, Akshita who was born in 1993 and a son Dhruv, who was born in 1997.
