Rangaraj Subbiah popularly known as Sathyaraj is an Indian actor, producer, director and media personality who is known for acting in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada and Hindi. He was born on 3rd October 1954 in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, India to Subbiah and Nathambal. His father was a doctor. He has two sisters, Kalpana and Roopa. He did his schooling at St Mary’s Convent School, and Suburban High School, Coimbatore. He completed his B. A. in Botany from Government Arts College, Coimbatore. Later he joined Komal Swamynathan a drama troupe. 

Sathyaraj made his acting debut in 1978 with Sattam En Kaiyil.In that year, he also appeared in the film, Kannan Oru Kaikkuzhanthai. He also worked as a production manager for the film. In 1979, he had three releases, Enippadigal, Muthal Iravu and Kudisal. In 1980, Sathyaraj appeared in two films, Raman Parasuraman, and Kuruvikoodu. Aani Ver was his only released film in 1981.

Later, in 1982, he acted in six films. In 1983, he was seen in five films. He had eleven releases in 1984. 1985 was a notable year for Sathyaraj. He made his Kannada debut with Shabash Vikram and Telugu debut with Khooni. In that year, he was seen in a leading role for the first time in the film, Saavi. The film was a hit. He had twenty-five more releases in that year. In 1986, he had thirteen releases. Mr Bharath and Kadalora Kavithaigal were his only successful film of that year. He appeared in twelve films in 1987. For his performance in the film, Vedham Pudhithu, Sathyaraj won his first Best Tamil Actor award in Filmfare Awards South. Chinna Thambi Periya Thambi was another hit film of the year. In 1988, he was seen in six films. He was nominated for Filmfare Award for Best Actor – Tamil for his performance in the film En Bommukutty Ammavukku. In 1989, he appeared in his 100th film, Vaathiyaar Veettu Pillai. He also appeared in five other films that year. He had six releases in 1990. For his performance in Nadigan, he won Tamilnadu State Film Award Special Prize and was nominated for Filmfare Award for Best Actor – Tamil. Pudhu Manithan and Bramma were her two released films in 1991. He appeared in five films in 1992. He had four releases in 1993.

Next, in 1994, he appeared in six films. He had three releases in 1995. He made his directorial debut this year with Viladhi Villain. Sivasakthi and Maaman Magal were his two released films in 1996. In 1997, he starred in three films, Vallal, Pagaivan and Periya Manushan. Kalyana Galatta was his only released film in 1998. He had four releases in 1999, Ponnu Veetukkaran, Suyambaram, Malabar Police and Azhagarsamy. From 2000 to 2006 he appeared in several films, such as Veeranadai (2000), Lootie (2001), Maaran (2002), Sena (2003), Jore (2004), 6’2 (2005), and Kurukshetram (2006) etc.

In the upcoming year, 2007, he appeared in four films, Adavadi, Periyar, Kannamoochi Yenada and Onbadhu Roobai Nottu. He was praised for his performance in Periyar and Onbadhu Roobai Nottu. Not only that he even won, Ananda Vikatan Cinema Award for Best Actor, Tamil Nadu State Film Award Special Prize and Vijay Award for Best Actor. Thangam and Vambu Sandai was his two released films in 2008. Sankham was his only released film in 2009. In 2010, Sathyaraj made his Malayalam debut with Aagathan. In that year he starred in four other films. He appeared in four films in 2011. Nanban was his only released film in 2012. He won Vijay Award for Best Supporting Actor and two nominations for his performance. In 2013, he appeared in his 200th film, Nagaraja Cholan MA, MLA. In that year, he made his Hindi debut with the film, Chennai Express. Raja Rani was another successful film which helped him to earn Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor – Tamil. Kalavaram, Sigaram Thodu and Poojai were his only released film in 2014. In 2015, Sathyaraj appeared in S. S. Rajamouli’s epic Baahubali: The Begining. The film breaks several records in Indian film. The film became the fourth-highest-grossing Indian film to date. Sathyaraj won IIFA Utsavam Award for Best Supporting Actor and Vikatan Award for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in the movie. With the film, a new film movement started Pan-India films. In 2017, Sathyaraj reprised his role in its sequel, Baahubali 2: The Conclusion. The film became the first Indian film ever to gross over 1000 crore in all languages in just ten days. The film became the second highest-grossing Indian film to date. For his outstanding performance in the film, he won Vikatan Award for Best Supporting Actor.

From 2015 and 2017, he appeared in twelve other films. In 2018, he had five releases. For his film Kanaa he won Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor – Tamil. In 2019, he had three releases, Jersey, Prati Roju Pandage and Thambi. In 2021, he had three other releases. He was seen in five films in 2022.

He has an upcoming film, Prince.

As a producer, Sathyaraj produced three films, Lee, Naaigal Jaakirathai and Sathya.

He also worked as a narrator in three films and as a singer for one film.

He won the Kalaimani Award from the Government of Tamil Nadu in 1991. In 1995, he won Tamil Nadu State Film Honorary Award. In 2011, he was honoured with the Kalaichchigaram Award from Norway Tamil Film Festival Awards. He was also honoured with two doctorate degrees in 2000 and 2017 fromSathyabama University and Vels University.

Sathyaraj married Maheswari in 1997. Together they had two children, Divya and Sibiraj.
