Shivaji Rao Gaekwad popularly known as Rajinikanth is an Indian actor, producer, screenwriter and philanthropist who is known for working in Tamil, Kannada. Telugu, Hindi, English, Malayalam and Bengali cinema. He was born on 12th December 1950 in Bangalore, Karnataka, India to Ramoji Rao Gaekwad and Jijabai. His father was a police constable. He has two brothers, Satyanarayana Rao and Nageshwara Rao and one sister Aswath Balubhai. He did his primary schooling at Gavipuram Government Kannada Model Primary School, Bangalore. Then he joined Acharya Paathshala, Bangalore and Vivekananda Balaka Sangha School to complete his schooling. He took part in several plays. He also studied at Madras Film Institute.

In his early days, he did several jobs, such as Carpenter, Coolie. He also worked at Bangalore Transport Service as a bus conductor.

He made his film debut in 1975 with the Tamil film, Apoorva Raagangal. He was praised for his role.

In 1976, he made his Kannada debut with the film, Katha Sangama. In that year, he also made his Telugu debut with the film, Anthuleni Katha. He also appeared in two other films that year.

In 1977, he acted in 15 films. He played different roles in those films. He was praised and got success several times.

In 1978 he appeared in 21 films. He was praised and received several positive reviews for each of his roles. His roles are critically acclaimed in some films. He won Tamil Nadu State Film Awards in the Special Award segment and a nomination for Filmfare Awards for Best Actor – Tamil for his film Mullum Malarum. 

He made his Malayalam debut in 1979 with Allaudinaum Arputha Vilakkum. He also appeared in other twelve films that year. For his performance in the movie Aarilirunthu Arubathu Varai, he won Filmfans Association Award for Best Actor and a nomination for Filmfare Awards for Best Actor – Tamil.

In 1980, Rajinikanth got a breakthrough with his film Billa, his first-ever commercial success. It was a turning point for his career. Billa established him as the top star of South Indian Cinema. Johnny and Murattu Kaalai were other successful films of that year. He also appeared in eight other films that year.

In 1981, he appeared for the last time in Kannada and Malayalam films till the date with Garjanai. He also appeared in seven films that year. 

He appeared in eight films in 1982. He won two awards and one nomination that year for the films, Moondru Mugam and Enkeyo Ketta Kural.

In 1983, he made his Hindi debut with the film, Andhaa Kaanoon. He also appeared in eight other films. 

In 1984, he starred in nine films. In that year he acted in a cameo role for the first time with Anbulla Rajinikanth. He won his first and last Filmfare Awards South for Best Actor – Tamil for his role in the film Nallavanukku Nallavan. He also won Filmfans Association Awards and Cinema Express Awards for Best Actor for that film. In that year, he was awarded Kalaimamani Award for his contribution to the Tamil film industry.

In 1985, Rajinikanth appeared in his 100th film, Sri Raghavendra. He won two awards in the Best Actor category for Sri Raghavendra. Bewafai, Naan Sigappu Manithan, and Padikkathavan were his other successful films, which were released that year. He also appeared in six other films that year. 

From 1986 to 1994, he appeared in several films such as Mr. Bharath (1986), Velaikaran (1987), Guru Sishyan (1988), Dharmathin Thalaivan (1989), Panakkaran (1990), Hum (1991), Pandian (1992), Yajaman (1993), Veera (1994) etc. He made his Hollywood debut with the only American film, Bloodstone. 

Rajnikanth appeared in the film Baashha in 1995. Earlier, he established himself as a popular actor before this film, but with this film, he became very popular to nearly demigod status among the masses. Another successful movie of that year was Muthu. His performance was praised and critically acclaimed. The film became the first Tamil film to be dubbed into Japanese. In that year, he made his Bengali film debut with Bhagya Debata. In that year he won three awards for his performance in Baashha and Muthu.

In 1997, he was seen in the film, Arunachalam, and in 1999 he appeared in the film, Padayappa. Both films of his highly acclaimed and commercially successful.

His next big success came from his 2005 film, Chandramukhi.

In 2007, he appeared in one of the biggest films of his career, Shivaji: The Boss. He won two awards for his performance.

In 2010, he appeared in another most successful film in his career, Ethiran. 

In the following year, he appeared in several films, such as Ra.One(2011), Lingaa (2014), Kabali (2016), Kaala (2017), 2.0 (2017), Darbar (2020) etc.

He has an upcoming film, Jailer.

Rajinikanth also worked as a screenwriter and producer.

Rajinikanth became the only Indian actor to be included in the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) syllabus, in a lesson titled From Bus Conductor to Superstar. In 2014, He made another record after opening his first official Twitter account. He gained 210000 followers within 24 hours, which is the fastest rate of followers for any Indian celebrity as well as among the top 10 in the world, according to The Economic Times.

The Government of India honoured him with the Padma Bhushan in 2000 and the Padma Vibhushan in 2016. He won Honorary Award – M.G.R. Award in 1989 from Tamil Nadu State Film Awards. He was honoured with the “Centenary Award for Indian Film Personality of the Year” in 2014 and the Icon of Global Jubilee award at the 45th and 50th editions of the International Film Festival of India. In 1995, he was honoured with Kalaichelvam Award by the South Indian Film Artistes’ Association. He was also honoured with Dadasaheb Phalke Award at the 67th National Film Awards. He also won several honorary awards in his career.

He married Latha Rangachari on 26th February 1981. Together they have two daughters, Aishwarya and Soundarya Rajinikanth.
