Sarathkumar Ramanathan is an Indian actor, politician, filmmaker, and singer who is known for acting in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada films. He was born on 14th July 1954 in New Delhi, India to Ramanathan and the late Pushpaleela. His father worked at the All India Radio, and then he joined the Press Information Bureau of India, and his mother Pushpaleela was a housewife. He has an elder brother, late Sudarshan Ramanathan and an elder sister Mallika Kandaswamy. He completed his schooling at Raja Muthiah High School, Central School in the Indian Institute of Technology Madras, and St. Patrick’s Anglo Indian Higher Secondary School. He studied at Loyola College and did his B.Sc. in Mathematics from The New College College. During his school life, he was interested in sports and played football, cricket and hockey. He even represented his school and college teams in several competitions. During his college life, he also joined NCC and became an Air Wing Cadet.  

After his college, he became a bodybuilder and earned the “Mr Madras University” title in 1974. He started his career in the newspaper Dinakaran. Firstly he was a cycle boy who distribute newspapers to shops. After completing his graduation he becomes a reporter in the same newspaper. Then he started his own travel agency business in Chennai.

Sarathkumar made his acting debut with the Telugu film Samajamlo Sthree in 1986. In 1988, Sarathkumar made his debut as a producer with the Tamil film Kan Simittum Neram. He also made his Tamil debut in acting in the film. In 1989, he acted in the film Sattathin Marupakkam. He had eighteen releases in 1990. In that year, he won a Cinema Express Award for Best Villain for his role in the film Pulan Visaranai.

Later in 1991, he acted in twelve Tamil films and three Telugu films. In 1992, he starred in twelve films. Suriyan, which was released that year, marked his first breakthrough. He gained some popularity with his acting. He won another Cinema Express Award Best Actor Special Award. In 1993 and 1994, he had eight releases each year. In 1994, his performance in Nattamai was another breakthrough performance of him. His acting was highly acclaimed and he gained a lot of popularity with wide recognition. He won Tamil Nadu State Film Award for Best Actor, Filmfare Award for Best Actor and Cinema Express Award for Best Actor. He acted in four films in 1995. Mahaprabhu and Nethaji were his only released films in 1996. In 1997, he starred in three films, Aravindhan, Surya Vamsam and Janakiraman. Surya Vamsam was another successful film of the year. For his performance, he won the Filmfare Award for Best Actor in Tamil and Cinema Express Award for Best Actor for the second time. Natpukaaga was another successful film in 1998. His performance was highly acclaimed and he won the Filmfare Award for Best Actor for the third time and the Tamil Nadu State Film Award for Best Actor for the second time. In that year, he had three other releases. He starred in another four films in 1999.

Pennin Manathai Thottu and Maayi were his only released films in 2000. Both of his films, helped him to earn positive reviews.

Next, In 2001, he had five releases. Thenkasi Pattanam and Samasthanam were his only released films in 2002. Arasu, Paarai and Diwan were his three released films in 2003. In 2004, he made his debut as a playback singer with Aai. He also appeared in four films that year. In 2005, he had four other releases. Thalaimagan was his 100th film which released film of 2006. He also directed the film. In 2007 and 2008, he starred in three films each year. In 2009, Sarathkumar made his Malayalam debut with Pazhassi Raja. His acting was praised and he ended up winning Vanitha Film Awards for Best Supporting Actor. In that year he also appeared in a film, 1977. 

In the upcoming years, in 2011 he had four releases along with Muni 2: Kanchana. His performance was highly praised in the film, he even won a Vijay Award for Best Supporting Actor for his performance. He made his Kannada debut with Saarathi in 2012. He had two other releases in that year. In 2013, he had three releases in that year. In 2014, he appeared in “India’s first photorealistic performance capture film” Kochadaiiyaan. He was seen in three other films that year. In the following years, he appeared in several films, such as Sandamarutham (2015), Santheyalli Nintha Kabira (2016), Jaya Janaki Nayaka (2017), Naa Peru Surya, Naa Illu India (2018), Seetharama Kalyana (2019), Vaanam Kottatum (2020) etc.

In 1998, Sarathkumar contested the Lok Sabha elections from Tirunelveli and lost. In July 2001 he was named Rajya Sabha member, but resigned before ending his term. Then he joined AIADMK and later quit it. On 31st August, Sarathkumar launched his political party the All India Samathuva Makkal Katchi. Before the 2011 Assembly elections, Sarathkumar joined the AIADMK alliance and won their two allotted seats.

Sarathkumar established Media Voice weekly magazine in Tamil and he is the editor of the magazine.

In 1984, Sarathkumar married Chaya Devi. Together they have two daughters, Varalaxmi, who was born in 1985 and Pooja, who was born in 1987. They separated in 2000.

In 2001, Sarathkumar again married actress Raadhika. Together, they have a son, Rahul in 2004.
