Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao Jr or popularly known as Jr NTR is an Indian actor, singer, and television presenter who was born on May 20, 1983, in Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh. He is primarily known for working in Telugu films. Rama Rao was born in the Nandamuri family to film actor and politician, Nandamuri Harikrishna and Shalini Bhaskar Rao. While his father is of Telugu descent, his mother is a Kannada Brahmin. He is also the grandson of Telugu actor and former Andhra Pradesh chief minister NT Rama Rao.
Jr NTR did his schooling at Vidyaranya High School in Hyderabad and then completed his intermediate education at St Mary’s College. He is also a trained Kuchipudi dancer.
Talking about his successful acting career, not many know Jr NTR made his debut as a child actor with the 1991 film, Brahmarshi Vishwamitra. He next played the titular role of Rama in the mythological film, Ramayanam for which he also won the National Film Award for Best Children’s Film.
Following this, he made his debut as a lead actor in the romantic drama film, Ninnu Choodalani. Rao was just 17 at that time. The film was also successful. Next, his first signed film, Student No. 1 was also released which again became very successful. After that, his third film Subbu was released in 2001 and was a commercial failure.
The very next year, Rao was seen in VV Vinayak’s debutant film, Aadi where he played the role of a man who wanted to avenge the death of his parents. The film was not just successful but also went on to become the highest-grossing film of the year. Following that, he was seen in films like Allari Ramudu, Naaga, Simhadri, Andhrawala, Samba, Naa Alludu, Narasimhudu, Ashok, and many others. Among these films, Simhadri was his second collaboration with S Rajamouli and also became the highest-grossing Telugu film of the year.
In 2006, NTR was seen in Krishna Vamsi’s film Rakhi which was a hit at the box office. He also received appreciation for his performance which is also considered to be one of his finest acts.
After working on a number of unsuccessful films, NTR got his breakthrough with the socio-fantasy film, Yamadonga in 2007. He underwent intensive preparations for the film. The film was a hit and earned positive reviews. The film not only brought him back into the Telugu film industry but also got him a Filmfare Award for Best Actor in Telugu.
Following that, he made a comeback to romantic films with Brindavanam in 2011. In 2012, he collaborated with director Ramesh for the fantasy action film, Shakti following which he was also seen in the romantic action film, Oosaravelli. Next in 2015, he got another major success with the Puri Jagannadh’s hit film, Temper. Following this, he was seen in the 2016 film, Nannaku Prematho directed by Sukumar. He also earned his second Filmfare Award for Best Actor – Telugu for his performance. Later, in the same year, Rao was seen in the hit film, Janata Garage where he was seen opposite hit Malayalam actor, Mohanlal.
