Mohanlal Viswanathan Nair popularly known as Mohanlal is an Indian actor, film producer, playback singer, television host and film distributor who is known for working in Malayalam, Tamil, Hindi, Telugu and Kannada films. He was born on 21st May 1960 in Elanthoor, Pathanamthitta district, Kerala to Viswanathan Nair and Santhakumari. His father was a former bureaucrat and law Secretary with the Kerala government. He had an elder brother, Pyarelal. He completed his schooling at Government Model Boys Higher Secondary School, Thiruvananthapuram. He did his graduation with a B. Com. Degree from Mahatma Gandhi College, Thiruvanthapuram. He acted in several stages of plays. He was also the Kerala State Wrestling Champion from 1977 to 1978.

Mohanlal made his film debut with the Malayalam film Manjil Virinja Pookkal in 1980. 

In 1981, Mohanlal appeared in eight films.

In 1982, he acted in fourteen films. 

In 1983, he starred in twenty-six films. He mainly acted in negative roles.  

In 1984, Mohanlal became a successful hero after appearing in the film Ivide Thudangunnu. In that year, he also appeared in twenty-four films.

In 1985, he was seen in twenty-five films.

In 1986, his role in the film, T. P. Balagopalan M.A. was praised and he won his first Kerala State Film Award for Best Actor. He received several positive reviews for his other film Sanmanassullavarkku Samadhanam. He also won Filmfare Award for Best Actor (Malayalam) for his performance in the film. He gained popularity and established himself after appearing in another film Rajavinte Makan. He also appeared in thirty-one films in that year.

In 1987, he was seen in thirteen films. But he was mostly praised and broke many stereotypes in Indian films with Thoovanathumbikal.

In 1988, he appeared in the film Chithram, which became the longest-running Malayalam film for played 366 days in theatre. He won a Kerala State Special Jury Award for his acting in films, Padamudra, Aryan, Vellanakalude Nadu, Ulsavapittennu and Chithram. He also appeared in seven other films that year.

In 1989, Mohanlal earned his first National Film Award Special Jury Mention for his performance in the film Kireedam. He was also praised for his other film, Varavelpu. He also appeared in eight films that year.

He starred in eleven films in 1990.

In 1991, Mohanlal acted in nine films. Two of his films, Kilukkam and Bharatham was the most successful film of that year. His performance was praised and critically acclaimed. He won State Film Award for Best Actor for his film Kilukkam. In that year, he won his second National Film Award for Best Actor for his performance in Bharatham. In that year he made his Tamil debut with the film Goura Vasalile.

In 1992, he appeared in another nine films.

Devaasuram was one of his most successful films of 1993. In that year, he was also seen in another seven films.

He was seen in five films in 1994. He made his Telugu debut with Gandeevam.

1995 was another successful year for Mohanlal. He won his third Kerala State Film Award for Best Actor and fifth Filmfare Award for Best Actor (Malayalam) for his performance in the film Sphadikam. He was also seen in four other films that year.

Kaalapani and The Prince were his only released films in 1996.

In 1997 he was seen in five films, along with Guru, which was chosen in the Best Foreign Language Film category as India’s official entry to the Oscars. In that year he also made his Tamil debut with Iruvar. His role in the film was critically acclaimed and won several awards.

In 1999, he won his third National Award and second for Best Actor for his role in the film Vanaprastham. With this film, Mohanlal got international recognition. His performance was critically acclaimed. He also won several other awards. He starred in two other films that year.

He starred in three films in 2002. In that year he made his Bollywood debut with Company. With his Bollywood debut, he won IIFA Awards, and Star Screen Awards for Best Supporting Actor for his acting.

In 2005, he was seen in five films. He was praised and received several positive reviews for his performance in the films, Udayananu Tharam and Thanmathra. He won his fifth Kerala State Film Award for Best Actor and seventh Filmfare Award for Best Actor for his performance in Thanmathra. 

In 2006, he appeared in seven films.

In 2007, he won another Kerala State Film Award for Best Actor for his performance in Paradesi. In that year he also appeared in five films.

In the following years, Mohanlal appeared in several films, such as Madampi (2008), Bhagavan (2009), Oru Naal Varum (2010), pranayam (2011), Grandmaster (2012), Drishyam (2013), Koothara (2014), Lailaa O Lailaa (2015), Janatha Garage (2016), Villain(2017), Drama (2018), Lucifer (2019), Big Brother (2020), Drishyam 2 (2021), 12th Man (2022) etc.

He has several upcoming films, Alone, Monster, Barroz: Guardian of D’Gama’s Treasure, Ram and L2:Empuran. With Barroz: Guardian of D’Gama’s Treasure, Mohanlal will mark his directorial debut.

He produced and distributed several films under his production house, Pranavam Arts International. 

He also worked as a narrator and voiceover artist in several films. He sings near about fifty songs in his career, such as “Aarumilla” for Padamudra, “Awara Hoon for Vishnulokam, “Ezhimala” for Sphadikam and many more.

Mohanlal made his television debut as a reporter in 2015 with Sanskrit News. Mohanlal also appeared in several television shows as a host and judge.

In 1987, Mohanlal was associated with the radio drama Jeevanulla Prathimakal.

He was seen in several short films and theatre play in his career.

He is the brand ambassador for several brands. He also serves as a goodwill ambassador for the government and other NGOs. 

He co-owned a production company, Casino during 1980. He owns Maxlab Cinemas and Entertainment, a film distribution company. He started Vismayas Max, a film pre and post-production studio. He also started a college for dubbing artists.

He also owns several restaurants.

In Celebrity Cricket League, Mohanlal was the captain of the Kerala Strikers team in 2012 and 2013.

In 2010, Mohanlal was listed 80th in India’s Most Trusted Persons, in a survey conducted by Reader’s Digest 2010. Mohanlal was honoured with Padma Shri in 2001 and Padma Bhushan in 2019 by the Government of India. In 2009, he was awarded the honorary rank of Lieutenant colonel in the Territorial Army. Mohanlal became the first actor in India to be awarded the honorary rank. He also received honorary doctorates from Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit in 2010 and the University of Calicut in 2018. 

He founded a non-profit charitable organization, the ViswaSanthi Foundation, to create and deliver high-impact and focused programs to the underprivileged sections of society in the areas of Healthcare and Education.

Mohanlal married Suchitra on 28th April 1998. Together they have two children, Pranav and Vismaya Mohanlal.
