Muhammad Kutty Panaparambil Ismail popularly known as Mammootty is an Indian actor and film producer who is known for acting in Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Hindi films. He was born on 7th September 1951 in Chandiroor to Ismail and Fatima. His father had a wholesale garment and rice business and was involved in rice cultivation. He has two brothers, Ibrahimkutty and Zakariah, and three younger sisters, Ameena, Sauda and Shafina. He completed his schooling at Government High School, Kulasekharamangalam, and Government School Ernakulam. Then he was admitted to Sacred Heart College, Thevara and Maharaja’s College, Ernakulam for his degree. He graduated with LL.B from Government Law College, Ernakulam. He practised law for two years.

In 1971, Mammootty made his film debut as a junior artist with the Malayalam film Anubhavangal Paalichakal. 

In 1973, he appeared in another uncredited role in Kaalachakram. 

In 1980, he appeared in the film, Vilkkanundu Swapnangal. He acted in his first credited role. In that year, he also appeared in the film, Mela.

In 1981, he acted in five films, but he gained popularity with Thrishna. In that year, he won his first Kerala State Film Award for Second Best Actor for his performance in Ahimsa.

1982 was another successful year for Mammootty. He appeared in twenty-three films, but he received a positive response and was critically acclaimed for his performance in Yavanika, Padayottam, and Ee Nadu.

In 1983, 1984 and 1985 he acted in 34 films each year. Most of his films went flop these times. But, he also did some good films, Aa Raathri, Athirathram, Adiyozhukkukal, Yathra, Nirakkoottu. He won several awards for his performance in this period, such as Kerala State Film Awards Best Actor Award, Kerala State FilmAward – Special Jury Award and two Filmfare Best Actor Awards.

In 1986, he was seen in thirty-five films including Mazha Peyyunnu Maddalam Kottunnu, Aavanazhi, Inspector Balram and Balram vs. Tharadas.

In 1987, he had fifteen releases. But his film New Delhi helped him to earn wide recognition. His performance in another film Thaniyavarthanam was highly acclaimed.

In 1988, he appeared in twelve films. Manu Uncle, Oru CBI Diary Kurippu, August 1, Abkari, Mukthi, 1921, and Sangham and Thanthram were his most successful films of that year.

In 1989, he again appeared in twelve films. In that year, he won his first National Film Awards Best actor and Kerala State Film Awards Best Actor for his performance in the film, Oru Vadakkan Veeragatha. Charithram, Adikkurippu, Utharam, Jagratha, Mahayanam, Mrigayaa were his some best films of the year. He won two other Kerala State Film Awards for Best Actor for his performance in Mahayana, Mrigayaa.

In 1990, he acted in twelve films. In that year, he made his Hindi debut with Triyathri and Tamil debut with Mounam Sammadham. He won his second Best Actor Award in the National Film Award for his acting in Mathilukal. Kottayam Kunjachan and Samrajyam were his two other successful films of that year.

In 1991, he had seven releases. He won another Filmfare Best Actor Award for his performance in Amaram. Thalapathi, Azhagan, Inspector Balram and Neelagriri were his other successful films.

In 1992, he made his Telugu debut Swathi Kiranam. In that year he also appeared in six films. His performance was praised for Kauravar, Soorya Manasam, and Pappayude Swantham Appoos.

In 1993, he was seen in seven films. He won Kerala State Film Award for Best Actor for the movie Vatsalyam. He had another successful release in that year, Dhruva.

In 1994, Mammootty won another Kerala State Film Award for Best Actor for the movie Vidheyan. In that year, he won his third and fourth Best Actor in National Film Award for his performance in the film Pontham Mada and Vidheyan. He also appeared in four other films that year.

In 1995 and 1996 he had five releases each year.

Oral Mathram, Kaliyoonjal and Bhoothakkannandi were his three released films in 1997. His performance was highly acclaimed and he won the Best Actor Award in Filmfare Awards for Bhoothakkannandi.

In 1998, he appeared in five films.

In 1997, he was seen in seven films including Megham.

In 2000, Mammootty made his English movie debut with Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar. He won another National Film Award Best Actor Award. In that year, he had five other releases. He won the Filmfare Best Malayalam Actor Award for his highly acclaimed performance in Arayannagalude Veedu. Valliettan was another hit film of the year.

In 2001, he appeared in two movies, Rakshasa Rajiv and Dubai.

He had three releases in 2002.

Chronic Bachelor and Pattalam were his two released films in 2003.

In 2004, he won another Kerala State Film Award for his performance in Kazhcha. He had another successful release in that year, Vesham. He had four other releases in that year.

He had six releases in 2005.

In 2006, he had seven releases. He won Kerala State Film Awards for his performance in Karutha Pakshikal that year.

In 2007, he had another seven releases.

He had six releases in 2008.

In 2009, he appeared in eight films. In that year, he won his fifth Kerala State Film Award for Best Actor for his performance in Paleri Manikyam.

He had nine releases in 2010.

August 15, Doubles, The Train, Bombay March 12 and Venicile Vyapari were his five released films of 2011.

In the following years, he appeared in several films, such as Cobra (2012)m Immanuel (2013), Gangster (2014), Fireman (2015), White (2016), Masterpiece (2017), Uncle (2018), Unda (2019), Shylock (2020), One (2021), Puzhu (2022) etc.

He has several upcoming films, such as Nanpakal Nerathu Mayakkam, Rorschach, Bilal, Agent and an untitled film.

He made his television debut with the 2010 television show Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations.

He sings six songs in his career.

He gave voice-over in four films, Anwar, 1971: Beyond Borders, Odiayan and Jana Gana Mana.

Apart from acting, Mammootty is the chairman of Malayalam Communications since 2010, which runs the Malayalam television channels Kairalii TV, Kairali News and Kairali We. 

He is the owner of multiple production ventures. He established Playhouse in 2009, the distribution-production banner and the Mammootty Kampany in 2021. He was also the co-owner of the Casino production house. He also formed a television production company, Megabytes. He is the owner of the distribution company, Mammiitty Technotainment.

He also does and supports charitable works and helped people with his works.

He married Sulfath in 1979. Together they have a daughter, Surumi, who was born in 1982 and a son Dulquer Salmaan, who was born in 1986.
