Rahul Gandhi, like most politicians, has faced his share of controversies throughout his political career. Some of the more notable controversies include:
- His citizenship: In 2015, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) raised questions about Gandhi’s citizenship, claiming that he held British citizenship at the time of his election to the Lok Sabha. Gandhi denied the allegations and produced his Indian passport as proof of his citizenship.
- His involvement in the AgustaWestland scam: In 2016, the BJP accused Gandhi of being involved in the AgustaWestland scam, which involved allegations of bribery and corruption in the procurement of helicopter for Indian Air Force. Gandhi has denied any involvement and has stated that the accusations are a politically motivated campaign by the BJP.
- His remarks on the Congress party being responsible for India’s partition: In 2017, Gandhi made a statement in which he said that the Congress party, of which he is a member, was responsible for the partition of India in 1947. This statement was criticized by members of his own party, as well as by leaders of the BJP and other political parties, who accused him of distorting history and undermining the role of leaders such as Jawaharlal Nehru and Mahatma Gandhi in India’s freedom struggle.
- His alleged involvement in the National Herald case: In 2012, the BJP accused Gandhi of being involved in a case of alleged financial irregularities in the acquisition of the National Herald newspaper by the Young Indian company, in which he and his mother Sonia Gandhi were named as accused. Gandhi has denied any wrongdoing and the case is still ongoing in the court.
- His alleged involvement in data theft: In 2021, the government accused Gandhi and the Indian National Congress of being involved in data theft and mishandling of sensitive data in an alleged toolkit case. Gandhi and the Congress party denied the allegations and accused the government of political vendetta.
It is worth noting that not all of these controversies have been proven in court, and some are still ongoing legal cases.
