Pierce Brendan Brosnan is an Irish actor and film producer known for acting in American films and television series. He was born on 16th May 1953 in Drogheda, Louth, Ireland to Thomas and May Brosnan. His father was a carpenter, and his mother was a nurse. He completed his education at Elliott School.
After finishing school, he learnt commercial illustration at Saint Martin’s School of Art. Later, he trained for three years as an actor at the Drama Centre London.
He started his career as an acting assistant stage manager at the York Theatre Royal. He made his acting debut with the play Wait Until Dark. He also acted in several other plays earlier in his career.
In 1979, Pierce made his television debut with the television film, Murphy’s Stroke. In 1980, he made his film debut with The Long Good Friday. In the same year, he acted in another film, The Mirror Crack’d. Along with it, he acted in two television series, The Professionals and Hammer House of Horror. In 1981, he gained wide recognition and popularity after he appeared in the television series, Manions of America. In 1982, he starred in three television series, Play for Today, Nancy Astor and Remington Steele. But his performance in Nancy Astor was highly acclaimed and helped him to earn a nomination for Best Supporting Actor in Golden Globe Award.
From 1986 to 1994, Pierce appeared in ten films, such as Nomads (1986), The Fourth Protocol (1987), The Deceivers (1988), Mister Johnson (1990), The Lawnmower Man (1992), Entangled (1993), Love Affair (1994) etc. From 1988 to 1994, he was seen in six television films and two television series. In 1995, Pierce appeared as James Bond in Golden Eye. The film was the most successful Bond film ever. His performance was highly acclaimed and he was nominated for two awards, Saturn Award for Best Actor and MTV Movie Award for Best Fight. Night Watch was his only released television series of the year. In 1996, he was seen in two films, The Mirror Has Two Faces and Mars Attacks! His third film as James Bond, The World Is Not Enough helped him to win the Empire Award for Best Actor and earned a nomination for Golden Raspberry Award for Worst Screen Combo. The Tailor of Panama was his only released film in 2001. In that year he also appeared in two television shows, The Simpsons and Saturday Night Live.
Later, in 2002, Pierce produced and starred in Evelyn. Die Another Day was his other released film of the year. For his performance in the film, he was nominated for Saturn Award for Best Actor. In 2004, he appeared in two films, Laws of Attraction and After the Sunset. He also worked as an executive producer in After the Sunset. In 2005, Pierce was seen in the film, The Matador. His performance was highly acclaimed and he earned several nominations. He also produced the movie. Seraphim Falls was his only released film in 2006. In 2007, he also produced and starred in the film Butterfly on a Wheel. He also acted in the film Married Life that year. (2016), The Only Living Boy in New York (2017), Mamma Mia! In 1997, Brosnan received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for his contributions to the film industry. In 2002, he was also awarded an honorary degree from the Dublin Institute of Technology and, a year later, the University College Cork. In July 2003, Queen Elizabeth II made Brosnan an honorary Officer of the Order of the British Empire for his “outstanding contribution to the British film industry”. In the same year, he was rewarded the Irish Film and Television Academy Lifetime Achievement Award for his contribution to Irish Film. On 23 September 2004, he became an American citizen while retaining his Irish citizenship. In February 2013, Brosnan was awarded honorary patronage of the Dublin University Players society at Trinity College, Dublin. In 2020, he was listed at No. 15 on The Irish Times’ list of greatest Irish film actors.
As an Irish citizen, he is ineligible to receive the full OBE honour, which is awarded only to a citizen of the Commonwealth realms, but he is still allowed the letters “OBE” after his name.
He married Cassandra Harris in 1980. She died in 2001. Later, Pierce married Keely Shaye Smith in 2001. Pierce has five children.
