Phoebe Cates is an American actress, model, and producer who is known for working in Hollywood films. She was born on July 16, 1963, in New York City U.S. to Joseph Katz and Lily. Her father was a major Broadway producer and a pioneering figure in television. Phoebe attended the Professional Children’s School and the Juilliard School. Besides, her studies, Cates started modelling, appearing in Seventeen and other teen-oriented magazines, when she was just ten years old. A few years later, she wanted to become a dancer. However, after suffering from a knee injury, she had to quit her passion for dancing.
Following that, she had to resort back to modelling and started working as a teen model. However, she got dissatisfied with modelling and then decided to pursue acting as a career option. Her first acting stint came with the 1982 film, Paradise. She was motivated by her father to take up the role in the film. In the film, she was seen performing in full-frontal nude scenes and many other rear scenes while she was still a minor
She also made her singing debut in the film as she sang the title theme song of the movie and later recorded an album of the same name.
Later in the same year, she starred in Fast Times at Ridgemont High following which in 1983 she featured in the comedy film, Private School which co-starred Matthew Modine and Betsy Russell. In this film as well, she sang two more songs.
Next in 1984, Cates was cast in the TV mini-series Lace, based on a novel written by Shirley Conran. She was also seen in the sequel of the series. In the same year, her next film was Gremlins for Steven Spielberg which went on to become the highest-grossing film of her career.
It was again in 1984 when Cates made her debut on stage with the comedy play, The Nest of the Wood Grouse. Two years later, she again appeared in another play, Rich Relations at the Second Stage Theatre. Next in December 1989, she made her Broadway debut with The Tenth Man which was staged at the Vivian Beaumont Theater.
Along with her work on stage, she continued working in films as well in the 1990s majorly in supporting roles. Some of these films included Date with an Angel (1987), Bright Lights, Big City (1988), Heart of Dixie (1989), Shag (1989), Drop Dead Fred (1991), and Bodies, Rest & Motion (1993) (the latter three also featuring Bridget Fonda).
After that, she last worked in the 1994 film, Princess Caraboo opposite her husband, Kevin Kline after which she shifted away from acting to focus on her family. However, she made a comeback in 2001 with the film, The Anniversary Party.
In the year 2015, Cates provided the voice of her Gremlins character, Kate Beringer, for the video game Lego Dimensions.
