Mark Strong is a British actor born on August 5, 1963, in London, England to an Austrian mother and Italian father. While his father left his family when Mark was very young, he was raised alone by his mother who worked as an au pair. While he was just a child, his mother got his name legally changed to fit in with his English peers and was baptised a Catholic. He then attended Wymondham College in Morley, Norfolk. Later, he went to the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich to study German law, however, came back to London.
He then studied English and drama at the Royal Holloway, University of London before attending the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School.
Speaking about his career, he made his debut with television with the 1989 show, EastEnders and After Henry in the same year. Later, he appeared in two Prime Suspect serials for ITV as Inspector Larry Hall in Prime Suspect 3 and Prime Suspect 6.
He also had starring roles in two BBC Two drama serials, Our Friends in the North in 1996 and The Long Firm in 2004 which also earned him a BAFTA nomination for the latter. He also played the villainous Colonel Brand in Sharpe’s Mission in 1996.
In the same year, he was seen in the ITV adaptation of Jane Austen’s novel, Emma. Next in 1997, he played the role of Steve in the film adaptation of Nick Hornby’s Fever Pitch. Following this at the beginning of the 2000s, he appeared in Heartlands and in Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night at the Donmar Warehouse. For this, he was also nominated for the 2003 Laurence Olivier Award for Best Performance in a Supporting Role.
