His parents Catherine and Ian Gilchrist were both Canadian while his maternal grandfather Douglas Peters was a banker, economist, and politician. After spending his early years in London, Gilchrist relocated to Boston, Massachusetts during his childhood and then went to New York City and finally settled in Toronto, Ontario.
