An American actor by profession, James Brolin was born on July 18, 1940, in Los Angeles, California. Being the eldest of two brothers and two sisters, he is the son of Helen Sue, a housewife, and Henry Hurst Bruderlin, a building contractor. 

From a young age, he was interested in animals and model airplanes while he also began building and flying from the age of 10. After coming to her teenage days, he got fascinated with actor James Dean and then started shooting 8 mm films. Later, he got enrolled in University High School in West Los Angeles. 

He also attended the Santa Monica City College and then studied drama at the University of California Los Angeles before signing a contract with 20th Century Fox in 1960. During this while, he started out as a contract player in Sandra Dee movies. At the same time, he appeared on an episode of Bus Stop in 1961. Following this, he was seen in productions like Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea; Margie; Love, American Style; Twelve O’Clock High; and The Long, Hot Summer. 

In the 1960s, he was seen making guest appearances on the popular series, Batman opposite Adam West and Burt Ward. Next at the age of 20, he changed the spelling of his surname. Later, after working in several minor roles, he started appearing in leading roles in films like Sjyjacked and Westworld after which in the mid-1970s, he featured in regular leading roles in films such as Gable and Lombard, The Car, Capricorn One, The Amityville Horror, Night of the Juggler, High Risk, and many others. 

Apart from working in films, he also made his debut on television and was initially seen playing small roles in series like ‘Batman’ and ‘The Cat and the Fiddle’, ‘The Catwoman Goeth’, and ‘Ring Around the Riddler’. In 1968, he transferred to Universal Studios where he auditioned for co-starring opposite Robert Young in the medical drama, Marcus Welby, M.D. The series also went on to become one of the top-rated television shows of the time he became widely popular. Brolin also won the Emmy Award for Outstanding Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role. He also worked in a few other television films like Short Walk to Daylight and Trapped. 

At the same time, he was also focusing on films. Later, he made a comeback to television and was seen in the prime-time soap opera, Hotel. The show was again a hit and he was nominated twice for Golden Globes between 1983 and 1984. 

Since 2000, he started featuring in a number of supporting roles in films like Traffic, Catch Me If You Can, A Guy Thing, The Alibi, The Hunting Party, and Last Chance Harvey. Other than that, in his first voice acting role, Brolin will portray Emperor Zurg in the 2022 Toy Story spin-off film, Lightyear. 

Some of his best-known works include Stephen Kiley in Marcus Welby, M.D.(1969–1976), Peter McDermott on Hotel (1983–1988), and John Short in Life in Pieces (2015–2019), and his film roles such as Sgt. Jerome K. Weber in Skyjacked (1972), John Blane in Westworld (1973), and General Ralph Landry in Traffic (2000).
