World Press Freedom Day 2020: The story of real warriors

World Press Freedom Day is a global observance and not a public holiday. World Press Freedom Day was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1993 and has been celebrated every year since then. The United Nations General Assembly declared 3 May to be World Press Freedom Day. This day is a reflection among Media professionals about issues or Press Freedom and professional ethics. 3rd may acts as a reminder to government of the need to respect their  commitment to press freedom. World Press Freedom Day is a day of support for media which are targets for the restraint or abolition of Press Freedom.

World Press Freedom Day is one of the calendar events of the United Nation. It is planned, organized and promoted by the  United Nation. World Press Freedom Day or We Press Day is announced by the United Nations General Assembly on 3rd May to spread awareness about the importance of freedom of press in information providing, functioning,it’s significance and to awaken the government of its duty to uphold and respect the right to freedom expression. It is also a day of remembrance for those journalists who lost their lives in the course of duty. This day reminds people that many journalists brave death or face jail to bring news to the public.

In the development of any country Media plays a crucial role. It not only aware people what is going on around the surroundings but also about the events which affect their lives. Freedom of Press should be taken seriously as safety of Journalists while delivering information during their duties is of utmost importance.

Themes of World Press Freedom Day :-

In 2016, the theme was “Access to Information and Fundamental Freedoms- This Is Your Right”. This theme highlighting the role of journalism in freedom of information and sustainable development in the digital age.

In 2017, the theme was “Critical Minds For Critical Times; Media’s role in advancing peaceful, just and inclusive societies”.

In 2018, the theme was “Keeping Power in Check; Media, Justice and The Rule of Law”.

In 2019, the theme was “Media For Democracy; Journalism and Elections in Times of Disinformation”. 2019 Theme focusses on the challenges faced by media in elections and also media’s potential in supporting peace. During the time of elections discusses the faced by media. “No democracy is complete without access to transparent and reliable information. Truthful reporting and peace journalism were highlighted by Pope Francis in his Message for World communications Day last year. In this message, he calls journalists “protectors of news” and describes what they do as “not just a job” but a “mission”.

This Year 2020 Theme : “Journalism without Fear or Favour”. The Sub-themes are :-
  • Safety of media worker Men journalists as well as Women journalists.
  • Gender Equality in all Aspect of the Media.
  • Independent a and Professional Journalists free from People and Commercial Influence.

World Press Freedom Day History :-

In 1993, the first World Press Freedom Day was proclaimed bt the UN (United Nation) General Assembly. On the recommendation of UNESCO’S General conference. May 3 chooses as the date of celebrations. This particular date was only chosen as it marked the anniversary of Windhoek Declaration. On this day the fundamental principles of the press are discussed and celebrated. World Press Freedom Day acts as a reminder of the importance of a free press in a functioning and safe society and serves to commemorate the journalists who have lost their lives in support of free press. In a time when media coverage is prone to fear – mongering and sensationalism taking time to appreciate and seek out journalism with integrity has never been more important. 

The 20th celebration of World Press Freedom Day in 2019 is lead by UNESCO. In 1976, World Press Freedom Committee was established by some independent journalists to promote and defend press freedom and cover 44 media organisation from around the world. This organisation is located in Argentina. It is basically a statement of fundamentals of press freedom assembled in 1991 by the African Journalists to encourage an independent African press.

The Vision of the declaration is promoting and independent and pluralistic press as said by UNESCO. The agenda of the declaration has been publicized throughout the world in the form of world Press Freedom Day.

According to the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ), at least 95 journalists were killed or lost their lives in 2018 during the course of their work. The no. Of deaths is higher than in 2017, but not higher than 2006 that was 155.

Celebration of World Press Freedom Day In India :-

In India, Press Freedom Day is celebrated to salute the Media Journalists who risked their lives in providing information or sometimes lost their life in the duty. According to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, everyone has the right to Freedom of opinion and expression Freedom of the Press, if it means anything at all, means the freedom to criticize and oppose George Orwell, Human right includes freedom to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive information and ideas through any media.

Various Government officers, Minister’s take part while organising several events like art exhibitions, honour awards for the Journalists who have risked their lives on duty etc. On this day in India. To preserve the freedom of the press and to maintain and improve the standards of newspapers and news agencies in India and to inculcate principles of self-regulation among the press,the government of India under the Press Council Act, 1978 has set up Press Council of India, an autonomous , statutory, quasi- judicial authority.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has stressed that a free press makes a stronger democracy! He added that today, let us reaffirm our commitment towards steadfastly supporting a free press. It is the multiplicity of ideas and human expression that makes us more vibrant as a society. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also appreciated the proactive role of everyone on social media for their commendable work towards safeguarding the freedom of press and expression. He also applauded all those who have been working tirelessly to uphold freedom of Press. It is due to these countless women and men that the spirit of a free press is significantly enhanced.

It is hoped that through World Press Freedom Day, in coming days, we will be successful towards forming a healthy, free, fearless and more responsible media.
