In all over the world May day or International workers day is celebrated including India on the 1st of May. May day is also known as Labour day and international worker’s day. 1st of May this day is also celebrated as “Maharashtra Day”. This day is celebrated in most of the countries. On this day there was a Holiday, public and government offices, schools and Colleges are closed and The bank Holiday is not confirmed on 1st of May. More than 80 countries observed this day is national holiday. On this day, speeches will be given by politicians. May day celebrates the rights of labourers. Workers or Labourers are an inseparable part of the society. No nation can function properly if the workers refuse to go to work for even a single day. So naturally, it is of immense importance that the workers are treated well by their jobs.

May day is celebrated internationally. May day or International workers day is dedicated to the workers for their economic and social achievement. May day or Labour day is celebrated in order to pay respect to their working class. Worker’s have made to make the world strong and prosper. The day is exclusively dedicated to workers who should know their rights. May day is basically a festival for workers and it respects them. In many states this day is a national holiday. India celebrated this day by different names. In Hindi, it is known as Kamgar Din. In Marathi, it is called Kamgar Din, Uzhaipalar Dhinam in Tamil. 

May day is celebrated by different countries :-

The first of May is a national, public Holiday in many countries across the world. In India, every year Labour day is a public holiday held on 1st of May. For the first time, May day was celebrated in India in the year 1923 in Chennai, the capital city of Tamil Nadu. In England, the celebrations consist of Morris dancing and dancing around a Maypole. In Germany, in the year 1933, Labour day was declared as an official holiday. In Canada, the United States of America (USA) and Australia, May day is celebrated at various times of the year. Such as United States and Canada, which celebrate Labour Day on the first Monday of September.

May day or Labour day or International workers day is a countrywide holiday in a majority of European nations including Sweden, Poland, France, Finland, Germany, Spain, Norway, Italy etc. Brazil, Cuba, Panama, Guyana, Mexico, Argentina, Peru, Uruguay and Chile also celebrated this day. In most cases as “Labour day”, “International worker’s Day” or some similar name – although some countries celebrate this day as a Labour Day on other dates significant to them.

History of May day or International worker’s day :-

In Chicago, the USA, a union of workers had announced a general strike in 1886 for an 8-hour workday. In the late 19th century, May day originates from the United States Labor union movement. In late nineteen century the working condition of Labor were unsafe. People working had to work 12-16 hours per day. Therefore American passed resolution, In 1884 the “FOLTU” the full name of that (Federation of Organized Labor and Trades Unions). American federation passed a resolution that “eight hours shall constitute a legal day’s labor from and after  1st May, 1886”. By 1886 around 250,000 workers were involved in the eight-hour Day movement. In 1886 on the 1st of May , several labour Unions across the US went on strike, demanding a standard eight hours of working. There was a bloodshed in a Chicago’s Market. The strike had turned violent. To control the crowd, the policemen started shelling. Bombs were thrown into the public. Many workers were killed and a few were injured. Therefore this day is recognized as a holiday by a socialist organization. The international Labour Organisation conducts various events and programs to Mark the day.

  • May day is celebrated to pay the contributions, worker’s have made to make the world strong and prosper.
  • In the late 19th century, thiis day is celebrated for the worker’s struggles and the subsequent empowerment.
  • On this day speeches will be given by the politicians.
  • The Labour kisan party has introduced May day celebrations in Madras.
  • On the occasion of labour day, May day or international worker’s day, we can pay our respect to their efforts.
  • On this day celebrate their jobs without creating any discrimination among them.
  • Labour day is very significant to acknowledge the efforts of the workers who provide us with their daily service.
