The campaign to celebrate the nation’s Fathers did not meet the same enthusiasm-perhaps. Because, as one florist explained, “Father’s have not the same sentimental appeal that mother’s have”.

In 1908, on July 5, a West Virginia church sponsored the nation’s first event clearly in honor of Father’s a Sunday sermon in memory of the 362 men who had died in the previous December’s explosions at the Fairmont Coal Company mines in Monongahela, but it was a one time commemoration and not an annual Holiday. The next year, a Spokane, Washington, woman named Sonora Smart Dodd, one of six children raised by a widower, tried to establish an official equivalent to mother’s Day for male parents. She went to local churches, the YMCA, shopkeepers and government officials to drum up support for her idea, and she was successful Washington State Celebrated the nation’s first statewide Father’s Day on June 19, 1910.

History of Father’s Day :-

The idea of Father’s Day can be traced back to 1910. It is believed that Mrs. Sonora Smart Dodd is the brain behind this day. Mrs. Sonora Smart Dodd, whose father, the Civil war Veteran William Jackson Smart, as a single parent reared his six children. Mrs Dodd initially suggested June 5, the anniversary of her father’s death as a date for a father’s Day. It is claimed she did not provide the Organizers with enough time to make the arrangements, and thus the celebration was put back to the third Sunday of June.

Sonora, along with her five siblings were brought up by his father after their mother died in childbirth. His father neither remarried nor placed his Children under the care of others. Because of this, Dodd was grateful to his father, William Jackson Smart-a civil war Veteran and he wanted to honor him.

Her noble idea of Father’s Day came about after hearing a sermon about Mother’s Day by Anna Jarvis at Central Methodist Episcopal Church. She later approached her pastor and proposed there be a day honoring fathers, which would mirror Mother’s Day. The first father’s Day in June was Celebrated June 19, 1910, in Spokane, WA. In 1924, President Calvin Coolidge recommended the day as a national holiday.

President Lyndon Johnson made Fathers Day a holiday to be Celebrated on the third Sunday of June in 1966, though the day was not officially recognised until 1972, during the presidency of Richard Nixon.
