Rishi Raj Kapoor is an Indian actor, film director and producer who is known for working in Hindi films. He was born on 4th September 1952 in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India to Raj Kapoor and Krishna Kapoor. His father was a popular actor in Hindi films. He has two brothers, Rajiv and Randhir and two sisters, the late Ritu Nanda and Rima Jain. Actor Prithviraj Kapoor was his grandfather. Trilok Kapoor was his paternal granduncle. His maternal uncles are Prem, Rajendra, and Narendra Nath, as well as Prem Chopra. His paternal uncles are Shashi Kapoor and Shammi Kapoor. His paternal cousins are Anil Kapoor, Boney Kapoor and Sanjay Kapoor. Actress Karisma Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor are his nieces and the actors Armaan Jain and Aadar Jain, and the businessman Nikhil Nanda are his nephews. He did his schooling at Colonel Brown Cambridge School, Dehradun, and Campion School. Then he studied at Mayo College, Ajmer. 

When Rishi was just three years old, he made a special appearance in a song for the 1955 film Shree 420. In 1970, he appeared in the film Mera Naam Joker. For his performance as a child artist, Rishi was highly acclaimed and he won National Film Award for Best Child Artist. 

Rishi made his film debut in the lead role in 1973 with the film Bobby. Her acting was praised and he won the Filmfare Best Actor Award. Zehreela Insaan was his only released film in 1974. In 1975, he appeared in four films, Rafoo Chakkar, Zinda Dil, Raaja and Khel Khel Mein. In 1976, he had six releases. In 1977, he was seen in four films, Hum Kisise Kum Naheen, Amar Akbar Anthony, Chala Murari Hero Banne and Doosra Aadmi. In 1978, he starred in five films. In 1979, he appeared in four films, Jhoota Kahin Ka, Sargam, Duniya Meri Jeb Mein and Salaam Memsaab. For his performance in Sargam, Rishi was nominated Filmfare Award for Best Actor. He acted in six films in 1980. Zamaane Ko Dikhana Hai, Katilon Ke Kaatil, Biwi-O-Biwi and Naseeb were her four released films in 1981. He was seen in three films of 1982, Deedar-E-Yaar, Prem Rog and Yeh Vaada Raha. For his performance in Prem Rog, Rishi was nominated for another Filmfare Award for Best Actor. In 1983 and 1984, Rishi appeared in three films each year. In 1985 and 1986, Rishi had six releases each year. Rishi was seen in seven films in 1987. He had five releases in 1988. In 1989, Rishi appeared in nine films. Chandni was his most successful film of the year. Rishi was even nominated for another Filmfare Award for Best Actor for his performance in the film.

Later, in 1990, he starred in four films, Azaad Desh Ke Gulam, Sher Dil, Amiri Garibi and Seshnaag. In 1991 and 1992, Rishi had six releases each year. In 1993, Rishi appeared in eight films. He was seen in six films in 1994. Saajan Ki Baahon Mein, Hum Dono and Yaraana were his three released films of 1995. In 1996, he starred in two films, Prem Granth and Daraar. Kaun Sachcha Kaun Jhootha was his only released film in 1997. In 1999, he was only seen in the film, Jai Hind. Karobaar: The Business of Love and Raju Chacha were his two released films in 2000. Kuch Khatti Kuch Meethi and Yeh Hai Jalwa were her two released films in 2001 and 2002. In 2003, he appeared in three films, Love at Times Square, Kucch To Hai and Tehzeeb. Hum Tum and Pyaar Mein Twist were his two released films in 2004 and 2005. In 2006, he starred in two films, Love Ke Chakkar Mein and Fanaa. In 2007, he was seen in two English language films, Don’t Stop Dreaming and Sambar Salsa. He made a special appearance in the film Om Shanti Om. He was also seen in the film, Namastey London. Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic and Halla Bol were his two released films in 2008.

Next, in 2009, Rishi appeared in five films. But his performance in Luck by Chance was praised and he was nominated for another, Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor. In 2010, he starres in two films, Do Dooni Chaar and Sadiyaan. For Do Dooni Chaar, Rishi won Filmfare Critics Award for Best Actor. Tell Me O Kkhuda and Patiala House were his two released films in 2011. In 2012, he had four releases, Student of the Year, Housefull 2, Jab Tak Hai Jaan and Agneepath. For his performance in Agneepath, Rishi was nominated for another Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor. He had five releases in 2013. In 2014 and 2015, he had two releases each year. In 2016, Rishi appeared in four films, Kapoor & Sons, Badman, one special appearance in Chalk N Duster and one cameo appearance in Sanam Re. For his performance in Kapoor & Sons, Rishi won Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor. Patel Ki Punjabi Shaadi was his only released film in 2017. He had four releases in 2018. The films were, Manto, 102 Not Out, Rajma Chawal and Mulk. Jhootha Kahin Ka and Body were his two released films in 2019.

After his death, a Posthumous film was released on Amazon prime, Sharmaji Namkeen.

He made his directorial debut in 1999 film, Aa Ab Laut Chalen.

Rishi’s autobiography Khullam Khulla: Rishi Kapoor Uncensored, was released on 15 January 2017. Rishi Kapoor wrote the book along with Meena Iyer.

Rishi Kapoor married actress Neetu Singh in 1980. Together, they have one son, Ranbir Kapoor and one daughter, Riddhima Kapoor Sahni. 

Rishi died on 30th April 2020 from leukaemia.
