Rajkumar Hirani is an Indian filmmaker, director, producer and editor who is known for working in the Hindi film industry. He was born on 20th November 1962 in Nagpur, Maharashtra, India. His father’s name is Suresh Hirani, who runs a typing institute in Nagpur. His mother’s name is Sheela Irani. He has a brother, Sanjeev and a sister, Anju. Rajkumar did his schooling at St. Francis De’Sales High School, Nagpur. He did his graduation in commerce. During his studies, he was involved with theatres. Later, he studied at the Film and Television Institute of India and he opted for the film editing course and earned a scholarship.
Earlier in his career, Rajkumar worked in several advertisements.
Later, he worked under Vidhu Vinod Chopra and worked on promos and trailers for 1942: A Love Story in 1994. Then, he edited promotions for Kareeb in 1998.
In 2000, he edited the film Mission Kashmir. In 2003, Rajkumar made his directorial debut with the film, Munna Bhai M.B.B.S. The film was highly acclaimed and the film won the National Film Award for Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment and the Filmfare Critics Award for Best Film and earned Hirani his first Filmfare Award for Best Screenplay and a nomination for the Filmfare Award for Best Director. He also worked as a writer and editor in the film. Lage Raho Munna Bhai was his second directed film which was released in 2006. He also worked as a writer and editor in the film. The film was also a blockbuster hit. The film won the National Film Award for Best Popular Film and earned Hirani a second Critics Award for Best Film award, a first Best Story award, a first Best Dialogue award, and a second Best Director nomination at Filmfare. His third directed film was 3 Idiots, which was released in 2009. The film was praised by critics and also by the audience. Hirani won his third National Film Award for Best Popular Film Award, first Filmfare Best Film and Best Director Award, and second Filmfare Best Screenplay and Best Story Award, for his direction. He also worked as a writer and producer of the film.
Later, in 2012, Hirani worked as an editor for the film, Ferrari Ki Sawaari. In 2014, Rajkumar directed his fourth film, PK. He made his debut as a producer with the film. He also worked as a writer and editor in the film. The film received 8 nominations at the 60th Filmfare Awards and won two. The film also won five Producers Guild Film Awards and two Screen Awards. The film also won the Telstra People’s Choice Award at the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne. In 2016, Rajkumar produced the hindi version of Saala Khadoos. In 2018, he directed the film Sanju. He also produced the film and worked as a producer, writer and editor. Sanju earned seven nominations at the 64th Filmfare Awards, including Best Film and Best Director for Hirani. But it won only two awards.
He launched a production house, Rajkumar Hirani Films.
