Manisha Koirala is a Nepalese actress who is known for working in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, English and Nepali films. She was born on 16th August 1970 in Kathmandu, Nepal to Prakash and Sushma Koirala. Her father is a politician and a former minister of the environment. She has one brother, Siddharth Koirala. Her grandfather Bishweshar Prasad Koirala was the Prime Minister of Nepal. Her two uncles, Girija Prasad and Matrika Prasad were also former Prime Ministers of Nepal. She studied at Vasant Kanya Mahavidyalaya. After that, she studied at Army Public School, New Delhi campus. She also earned a diploma in filmmaking from New York University.

During a break after her board exam, Manisha made her film debut with the Nepali film Pheri Bhetaula in 1989.

In 1991. Manisha made her Hindi debut with Saudagar. She attracted everyone with her acting. In that year, she appeared in another film, First Love Letter.

In 1992, she appeared in the film Yalgaar, which was a hit.

In 1993, she appeared in three films, Insaaniyat Ke Devta, Anmol, and Dhanwan.

In 1994, Manisha made her Telugu debut with Criminal. She also starred in four Hindi films in that year, Yuhi Kabhi, Milan, 1942: A Love Story, and Sangdil Sanam. For her film 1942: A Love Story, she received positive reviews, with critics hailing her as “a sensitive performer”. She was also nominated for Best Actress in Filmfare for the first time. For her bold performance in the film, it was certified U/A.

In 1995, Manisha made her Tamil debut with Bombay. Again, Manisha received critical acclaim and positive reviews. She also won several awards for her performance in the film. She also appeared in six Hindi films, Criminal, Anokha Andaz, Guddu, Ram Shastra, Akele Hum Akele Tum, and Dushmani: A Violent Love Story. 

In 1996, Manisha appeared three Hindi films, Agni Sakshi, Majhdhaar, Khamoshi: The Musical and one Tamil film, Indian. For her role in Khamoshi, she was praised, and won several awards.

Next year, Manisha appeared in four Hindi films, Sanam, Gupt: The Hidden Truth, Loha, and Dil Ke Jharohe Mein, Gupt was her biggest hit that year.

In 1998, she appeared in five films, Yugpurush, Salaakhen, Achanak, Dil Se.., and Maharaja. For her role in Dil Se.., she received several good reviews. It was an overseas hit also. The film became the first Indian film to enter the top 10 in the United Kingdom box office charts. The film won two National Awards and six Filmfare Awards. 

In 1999, Manisha appeared in seven Hindi films, Kachche Dhaage, Lal Baadshah, Laawaris, Jai Hind, Kartoos, Mann, Hindustan Ki Kasam and one Tamil movie, Mudhalvan. For her role in Mann, again Manisha received several positive reviews from critics. 

In 2000, she appeared in four Hindi films, Khauff, Baaghi, Raja Ko Rani Se Pyar Ho Gaya, and Champion.

In 2001, Manisha appeared in five Hindi films, Grahan, Chhua Rustam: A Musical Thriller, Lajja, Moksha, Abhay and one Tamil film Aalavandhan.

In the following years, she appeared in several films, such as Company (2002), Escape from Taliban (2003), Paisa Vasool (2004), Anjaane – The Unknown, Darwaza Bandh Rakho (2006, Anwar (2007), Tulsi (2008), Do Paise Ki Dhoop Chaar Aane Ki Baarish (2009), Elektra (2010), I Am (2011), Bhoot Returns (2012) before she had been diagnosed with ovarian cancer.

She made her comeback in 2015 and appeared in the film Chehere: A Modern Day Classic.

She appeared in Kannada film Game and Malayalam film Edavappathy in 2016. 

In 2017, she appeared in the film, Dear Maya.

In 2018, She appeared in Lust Stories and Sanju.

In 2019, She appeared in the film Prassthanam.

In 2020, she had one released, Maska.

In 2021, she appeared in the Hindi film 99 Songs, and the English film India Sweets and Sices.

She has one upcoming film, Shehzada.

She also hosted a TV show, Sawaal Dus Crore Ka.

She also produced several films in her life.

Apart from acting, Manisha is actively involved in social work, to promote women’s rights, prevention of violence against women, and prevent the human trafficking of Nepali girls for prostitution.

In 1999, she was appointed as a UNFPA Goodwill Ambassador for India. 

After her cancer treatment, she spread awareness about cancer. In 2022, Manisha launched the “Manisha Koirala Cancer Education Fund” with the support of Global College International, Kathmandu to give educational scholarships to children of cancer victims or survivors with poor financial backgrounds.

She had been diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer in 2012. After four years of treatment, she had been cancer-free for four years. 

Manisha married a Nepali businessman Samrat Dahal on 19th June 2010. But they separated in 2012.
