Anupam Kher is an Indian actor who is known for acting in Indian films and television shows and the former Chairman of the Film and Television Institute of India. He was born on 7th March 1955 in Shimla, Punjab, India to Pushkar Nath Kher and Dulari Kher. His father was a clerk in the forest department of Himachal Pradesh and his mother is a housewife. He completed his studies in economics at Government College, Sanjauli at the Himachal Pradesh University in Shimla. He dropped out in the middle to study Indian theatre at Panjab University, Chandigarh. He did his graduation from the National School of Drama (NSD) in New Delhi. During his University days, he participated in several plays. He taught drama in Raj Bisaria’s Bharatendu Natya Akademi, Lucknow.

He made his film debut in 1982 with Aagaman. In 1984, he was seen in two films, Saaransh and Utsav. For Saaransh, he won his first Filmfare Awards for Best Actor. In 1985, he appeared in six films. In that year, he made his television debut with the TV film, Janam. In 1986, he starred in another six films. In that year, for his performance in Janam, he was nominated for Best Supporting Actor at Filmfare Awards. In 1987, he made his Telugu debut with Trimurtulu. In that year, he appeared in an English language film, Nehru: The Jewel of India. He starred in six films. He acted in eleven films in 1988. In that year, his film Vijay helped him to win Best Supporting Actor in Filmfare Awards. In 1989, his TV film, Daddy helped him to earn several positive reviews. For his performance in Daddy, he won his first National Film Awards Special Jury Award and Best Actor (Critics) award in Filmfare Awards. He had fourteen other releases that year. His performance in Ram Lakhan was praised and he won the Best Comedian award at Filmfare Awards. In 1990, he made his Malayalam debut with Indrajaalam. He also acted in eight Hindi films that year.

In the following years, from 1991 to 1996, he appeared in a total of sixty-nine films, such as Lamhe (1991), Khel (1992), Darr (1993), 1942: A Love Story (1994), Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge (1995), Chaahat (1996) etc. During this period, he won several accolades, such as four Best Comedian Awards in Filmfare Awards and one Screen Award in India for Best Supporting Actor. In 1997, Anupam made his Tamil debut with V.I.P. He also acted in nine Hindi films that year. In 1998, he starred in thirteen films. Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and Bade Miyan Chote Miyan were his notable films of the year. In 1999, he had four releases, Hum Aapke Dil Mein Rehte Hain, Haseena Maan Jaayegi, Sooryavansham and Sarfarosh-E-Hind. For his performance in Haseena Maan Jaayegi, Anupam won the Best Comedian Awards in Screen Awards India.

Later, from 2000 to 2004, he appeared in several films, such as Kaho Naa… Pyaar Hai (2000), Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein (2001), Yeh Hai Jalwa (2002), Jaal: The Trap (2003), Veer-Zaara (2004) etc. In 2005, Anupam had six released films. Maine Gandhi Ko Nahin Mara was his most successful film of the year. For his performance in the film, Anupam won his second National Film Awards Special Jury Award. He also won two other awards Karachi International Film Festival Best Actor and Riverside International Film Festival at California Best Actor for his performance. In 2006, he had ten releases. But his performance in Khosla Ka Ghosla was praised. He won Global Indian Film Awards Best Comedian for his acting. In 2007, Anupam made his Chinese debut with Lust, Caution. He starred in nine Hindi films that year. In 2008, he appeared in eight films. In 2009, he made his Punjabi film debut with, Tera Mera Ki Rishta.

Next, in 2010 and 2011, he starred in nine and five films respectively. In 2012, he made his Kannada debut with the film, Parijatha. He had eight other releases that year. For his performance in Silver Linings Playbook, he was praised and won Critics’ Choice Awards in Best Acting Ensemble and Gold Derby Awards in Best Ensemble Cast. In 2013, he made his Marathi film debut with Kashala Udyachi Baat. In 2013 he acted in nine other films. In the following years, he appeared in several films, such as Main Tera Hero (2014), Baby (2015), M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story (2016), Toilet: Ek Prem Katha (2017), Aiyaary (2018), The Accidental Prime Minister (2019), The Kashmir Files (2022) etc.

He made his directorial debut with Om Jai Jagadish in 2002.

From October 2003 to October 2004, Anupam served as chairman of the Indian Film Censor Board.

In 2011 Anupam released his first book The Best Thing About You is You! In 2020, he wrote Your Best Day Is Today!, based on his experiences during the COVID-19 crisis.

He has previously served as the Chairman of the Central Board of Film Certification and the National School of Drama in India. The Government of India honoured him with the Padma Shri in 2004 and the Padma Bhushan in 2016 for his contribution to the field of cinema and arts. Kher was appointed Chairman of the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) in October 2017. A year later, he resigned as the chairman of the FTII, citing his work commitments for the American TV show New Amsterdam.

On 20 September 2021, Kher was awarded an honorary doctorate in Philosophy of Hindu Studies by the Hindu University of America.

Anupam Kher first married 1979 actress Madhumalti Kapoor. They separated soon. Anupam again married actress Kirron Kher in 1985.

Anupam Kher Controversy:

  • In May 2016, Anupam Kher shared a collage of Kashmiri Pandits killed during the 1990 exodus on Twitter regarding the killing of Hizbul Mujahideen’s ‘poster boy’’ Burhan Wani in an encounter. The collage raked up a storm on Twitter, and Twitteratis felt the tweet instigated ‘hate thoughts’. However, he tried to reason his tweet, the day later.
  • In 2016, after receiving Padma Bhushan, Anupam shared his joy on his Twitter page. However, people dug out his tweet from 2010, where he said, “There is NO authenticity left in the awards-giving system.”
