Born on October 11, 1942, Amitabh Bachchan is a famous Indian actor, film producer, television host, and former politician. He is one of the most influential actors in the history of Indian cinema and continues to impress his audience for decades. 

He was born in Allahabad to Hindi poet Harivansh Rai Bachchan and social activist Teji Bachchan. While his actual surname was Shrivastava, his father who opposed the caste system decided to go by his pen name ‘Bachchan’ and chose the same for Amitabh. He did his schooling at Boys’ High School & College in Allahabad followed by which he studied at Sherwood College in Nainital and Kirori Mal College, University of Delhi.

After completing his studies, Amitabh tries his hands at acting but did not get an opportunity. He also auditioned for the role of a newsreader at All India Radio but was rejected. Later, he joined a company in Kolkata (then Calcutta) as a business executive. 

However, Amitabh who was already a bit inclined towards acting finally made his film debut in 1969 as a voice artist in Mrinal Sen’s award-winning film, Bhuvan Shome. Later, his first acting role came in the Hindi film, Saat Hindustani. Next in 1971, he was seen playing a supporting film in the film Anand alongside legendary actor Rajesh Khanna. He also won his first Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor for his performance. In the same year, he was seen in many other films like Parwana, Reshma Aur Shera, and also Bawarchi. 

In the initial years of his career, most of Bachchan’s films were unsuccessful and he was still struggling to gain a spot. After working in a few unsuccessful films, he was spotted by screenwriter duo Salim–Javed, or Salim Khan and Javed Akhtar. They cast him in the hit film Zanjeer which was written by Salim Khan and Javed Akhtar as a co-writer. The film was released in 1972 and got him the title of “Angry Young Man”. The film was a major hit and got Bachchan much-needed recognition. He also earned his first Filmfare Award nomination for the film. Following this, Bachchan was seen in several other successful films under the collaboration of Salim-Javed. Some of those best-known films include Deewar and Sholay. 

His films turned into an overnight star and Bachchan soon became one of the most sought-after actors in the industry. Some examples of his blockbuster hits are Trishul, Kaala Patthar, and Shakti where he portrayed the role of a hero trying to fight the social evils in society. 

It was the same time when Bachchan also started appearing in several films alongside Jaya Bhaduri (now Jaya Bachchan). They got married in 1973 following which another of their successful films, Abhimaan was released and was a big hit. In the following two years, Amitabh was seen playing supporting roles and guest appearances in hit films like Namak Haraam, Kunwara Baap, Dost, and Roti Kapda Our Makaan. 

Later, after working as an action hero for several years, Amitabh started experimenting with other film genres including comedy and romantic. In 1975, he was seen in films like Chupke Chupke and Faraar, and Mili. Later, he came with two of the best-known films in his career and also in the history of the Indian Film Industry. This included Yash Chopra’s Deewar which got him another Filmfare Award Nomination. Next, his other major hit came in the same year with Sholay where he was seen in the role of Jaidev opposite a multi Starcast. 

Later, in 1976, he was seen in Yash Chopra’s romantic film. Kabhi Kabhi where was seen playing the role of a young poet. In the same year, he was seen playing a double role in the film Adalat. Next in 1977, he was seen in the comedy film, Amar Akbar Anthony which went on to become the highest-grossing film of that year. 

In 1978, Bachchan was seen in a series of hit films including Kasme Vande, Don, Trishul, Muqaddar Ka Sikandar, Ganga Ki Saugandh, and Besharam. 

In 1979, he got critical acclaim and commercial success with films like  Mr. Natwarlal, Kaala Patthar, The Great Gambler, and Manzil. It was the same time when he used his singing voice for the film, Mr Natwarlal. Following that, in other films, Dostana which was released in 1980 also was a major hit. 

Later in that period, he was seen in films like Shaan (1980), Ram Balram (1980),  Silsila (1981), Naseeb (1981), Lawaaris (1981), Kaalia (1981), Yaarana (1981), Barsaat Ki Ek Raat (1981) and Shakti (1982). 

Later, he started doing more double as well as triple roles. Some of his other films in the decade included Satte Pe Satta, Desh Premee, action comedy Namak Halaal, action drama Khud-Daar and the critically acclaimed drama Bemisal, Mahaan, Nastik and Pukar, Andha Kanoon, Mard, Aakhree Raasta, and Kaun Jeeta Kaun Haara, among others. 

It was in the same decade when in 1982 Bachchan while shooting an action scene opposite Puneet Issar for the film Coolie suffered a major injury in his intestine. During this while, he hit his abdomen on a table resulting in a splenic rupture causing major damage. He was immediately hospitalised and remained critically ill for several months. 

Following the injury, he later came back that year and completed the film which went on to become a box office hit and the top-grossing film of that year. 

However, later, he got diagnosed with Myasthenia gravis due to which he decided to quit films and got into politics. During his three-year stint in politics from 1984 to 1987, he was seen with political leaders, however, soon came back to films with the 1988 hit, Shahenshah. Subsequently, some other films including Jaadugar, Toofan, and Main Azaad Hoon were unsuccessful. 

During this time, Bachchan did not work in many films but got one major hit with the 1990 cult film, Agneepath. Later, he took a break of five years. It was during this time that the actor came up with his production house, Amitabh Bachchan Corporation, Ltd (ABCL) in 1996. In the coming few years, Bachchan struggled due to several failures in films alongside bank debts and mortgaged his bungalow. 

Finally, it was in 2000, when Bachchan again started rising to prominence with Yash Chopra’s hit film, Mohabbatein opposite actor Shah Rukh Khan. He also won his third Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor for the film. Later, he was seen in a variety of different characters in films like Ek Rishtaa: The Bond of Love, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham…, Baghban, Aks, Aankhen, Kaante, Khakee, and Dev. 

In addition to films, he also featured in television and billboard advertisements. Furthermore, he was seen working in films opposite his son Abhishek Bachchan such as Bunty Aur Babli (2005), the Godfather tribute Sarkar (2005), and Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna (2006). All of these films were quite successful. 

Some of his other films included Cheeni Kum, Shootout at Lokhandwala, Ram Gopal Varma Ki Aag, and The Last Year.  Some of these were successful while others were not. 

In 2009, Bachchan was again seen working with his son in the film, Paa where he played the role of a 13-year-old boy suffering from Progeria. The film was successful and also got him his third National Film Award for Best Actor and fifth Filmfare Best Actor Award. 

Next in 2010, he made his debut in the Malayalam film industry with the film Kandahar opposite Mohanlal. In 2013, he made his Hollywood debut in the film, The Great Gatsby making a special appearance. In 2015, he was seen in the critically acclaimed film, Piku opposite actors Deepika Padukone and Irrfan Khan. The film was successful and earned him his fourth National Film Award for Best Actor and his third Filmfare Critics Award for Best Actor.

In 2016, Bachchan was seen portraying a strong character of a lawyer in the courtroom drama film, Pink. While the actor is above the age of 70, he still manages to woo his audience through his impactful performance. Bachchan also has several films in his hand.
