Aditi Rao Hydari is an Indian actress, dancer, and singer known for working in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, and Malayalam films. She was born in Hyderabad to Ehsaan Hydari and his wife Vidya Rao, an acclaimed classical singer popular for thumb and Dadra genes of music. She lost her father in 2013. While her father was a Bohri Muslim, her mother is a Hindu by birth practicing Buddhist.
She is thus of mixed lineage that is of Bohri, Chitrapur Saraswat, and Telugu. She comes from two royal lineages that are of sir Muhammad Saleh Akbar Hydari and Raja J. Rameshwar Rao of erstwhile Raja of Wanaparthy family. She is the great-granddaughter of Akbar Hydari, former Prime Minister of Hyderabad state (colonial India), and the grandniece of Muhammad Saleh Akbar Hydari, former Governor of Assam. Aditi is the granddaughter of Raja J Rameshwar Rao, who headed the administration of Wanaparthi state during colonial India, and Shanta Rameshwar Rao, a much-respected educationalist in the city of Hyderabad. Also, filmmaker Kiran Rao is her maternal first cousin.
Her parents got separated when she was just two years old. While her mother moved to New Delhi, her father got remarried. Aditi spent her early days in Hyderabad and New Delhi during which she also started learning Bharatnatyam at age of 6 and then became a disciple of acclaimed dancer, Leela Samson. She did her schooling at A Krishnamurthy Foundation India School and did her graduation from the Lady Shri Ram College.
While she started her career as a Bharatnatyam dancer, she always had an interest in the art form following her association with Leela Samson. She also worked as a part of Samson’s dance group, Spanda. In the year 2004, she completed work on her first acting project titled Sringaram where she was seen in the role of a devadasi. The film was directed by Sharada Ramanathan. Following this, her first film had a theatrical release in the Malayalam film, Prajapathi which was released in 2006 where she was seen opposite Mammootty. Next, she made her debut in Bollywood with the film, Delhi-6 where she was seen in a supporting role. After marking her debut in Bollywood, she was seen in the romantic drama film, Yeh Gaali Zindagi where she portrayed the role of a wife of a former convict. She also received acclaim for her performance and further won the Screen Award for Best Supporting Actress. Later in the same year, she was seen in a supporting role opposite actor Ranbir Kapoor in Rockstar. However, after playing a few minor roles, Hydari finally got the chance to play a lead role in the film, London, Paris, and New York opposite Ali Zafar. In the year 2013, Hydari became a part of Mahesh Bhatt’s Murder franchise and was seen in the third part of the film. She also received positive reviews for her performance.
